Edit from a computer: The app is called BlogMe (no relation to BeerME). It's just ok, but seems to work. Does anyone know of a better free app for the iPhone to use with Google's Blogger?

"Reading anything on the Internet has become a full-on nightmare. As media outlets attempt to eke out as much advertising revenue as possible, we’re left trying to put blinders on to mask away all the insanity that surrounds the content we’re trying to read.

Good times and neat fun were had by all pumpkin heads in Damariscotta over this past weekend. Sunday's events featured a pumpkin boat regatta in which the SS Mexicali Blues aka 'Ship of Fools' took first place, with time to spare for a most triumphant victory lap by Captain "Malloy". The craft, constructed by JK, Topher & August was built out of a hollowed out 500 lb pumpkin.

What does the other sex look for when viewing a photo online of a potential mate? The NY Times has this to say:

"Smile. At least that was the conclusion of a recent study by OkCupid.com, the popular dating site for 20-somethings. To determine which factors made a photo more attractive, the staff tabulated the number of interested responses to thousands of pictures, then broke down their characteristics. The findings were intriguing, to say the least. Women responded more often to pictures in which the man is looking off camera, not into it. Men were more likely to respond to pictures in which the woman is at home (and looking a little come-hither), rather than out with friends or on a trip. But for both sexes, pictures in which the subjects are smiling uniformly trounced the stone-faced ones."

I thought this was worth posting here. Our good friend August is in Guatemala city and has had quite the week. Here is an email he sent out on May 31, along with some pics. Also, keep in mind that in some of the photos (the ones with the cars) the mud is probably about 3-4 feet deep. Stay safe man!

Hey everyone,

As some of you know the s!#* is hitting the proverbial fan down here in Guatemala. In the past five days I've seen an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, a tropical storm, floods, and mudslides. The airport remains closed and many of the roads are blocked by debris. I just wanted to write everyone and let you know that I'm safe and no worse for the wear.

Today I went to one of the surrounding towns to help dig out homes that have been destroyed by a mudslide. I have never seen such force that gravity, water, and dirt can produce. I saw cars that had been pushed into homes and boulders the size of a person that knocked down steel gates. Right now the country's official death toll is at 82 but that is certain to rise as the search continues for bodies. In the town where I am helping, there are still people unaccounted for and I think tomorrow I will actually be helping to search for them. But it is always uplifiting to see communities mobilize to help those affected.

In happier news, I'm still having a great time down here and can't wait to see everyone in a few weeks! I'll be in touch and try to send some pictures.

I just finished The Professor and the Madman, written by Simon Winchester, and wanted to share this book with everyone who reads this blog. The nonfiction story tells the tale of the making of the Oxford English Dictionary. While that sounds terribly boring, Winchester does a magnificent job capturing the right amount of detail which includes a murder, an insane asylum, and a book that took 70 years to write. It reads very quickly (it took me a week to finish it), so go pick it up.

And it mentions a small Maine Indian tribe from the midcoast known as the Wowenocs (which I think is spelled Wawenock).

I've always been a fan of the cafe racers. This is a CB750 project from the Copenhagen-based Wrenchmonkees.

"The base is a 1979 (KZ) spec bike, which has been given a new rear frame, bars, fender, and seat and battery box, plus a rewire. There’s plenty of power from the stock inline four motor—which breathes through four Keihin carburettors and puts out over 75 bhp—but new ‘Megatron’ mufflers and K&N filters will help the breathing still further. The starting price for projects like these is around 70,000 kroner (US$13,000) and up, which includes the donor bike. And because the structural modifications are minimal, the finished motorcycle is easier to register and get road approval.
