How do you make a beer that's 32% alcohol when the beer yeast dies before it gets that strong? What about champagne yeast? Well that dies at around 28%. So, why not make the beer, then freeze it? Remember, alcohol doesn't freeze. Fractional freezing is cool! (pun intended)

A Real Man
I didn't want to post this. It takes place in Massachusetts, which goes against having a midcoast Maine blog, but this is too crazy not to post. The NY Times has a story about a guy that tuna fishes in a kayak. If you're thinking that's no big deal, read more about tuna. Imagine hooking into an 800 pound fish, while you're 2 miles out to sea, in only a kayak.

A Message to Garcia
A Message to Garcia was written in 1899, and by 1914 over 40 million copies had been printed. There is a lot of great stuff in this short read!
IN ALL THIS CUBAN BUSINESS there is one man stands out on the horizon of my memory like Mars at perihelion. When war broke out between Spain and the United States, it was very necessary to communicate quickly with the leader of the Insurgents. Garcia was somewhere in the mountain fastnesses of Cuba—no one knew where. No mail or telegraph could reach him. The President must secure his co-operation, and quickly.
What to do!
Someone said to the President, "There is a fellow by the name of Rowan will find Garcia for you, if anybody can."
Rowan was sent for and given a letter to be delivered to Garcia. How "the fellow by name of Rowan" took the letter, sealed it up in an oil-skin pouch, strapped it over his heart, in four days landed by night off the coast of Cuba from an open boat, disappeared into the jungle, and in three weeks came out on the other side of the Island, having traversed a hostile country on foot, and having delivered his letter to Garcia—are things I have no special desire now to tell in detail. Quite the drought

Will Friendship finally allow booze to be sold in this small coastal town? It's been dry for almost 100 years, but if the vote turns out anything like the results in '87, '92, or '00, don't count on it.

First

The first board from all the new workings at TeamEight has been pressed and it looks sick! This one is for Tristan, who won the Downtown Showdown (Portland's rail jam) last year. And a special thanks for Nicole who looks exquisite modeling the board!

grEIGHT

The TeamEight website is up and running complete with the ability to custom design your own snowboard! Hand built right here in Maine (Portland), TeamEight snowboards have evolved over the years into a top of the line product. Look for them all winter at a mountain near you, although we prefer Sugarloaf.

Maps

Think old school maps are cool? Check out this story about a local business combining old school and new school technology.
Also, USM recently renovated a large amount of floor space dedicated to maps. Check out more information here. And check out the "Map search" feature in the upper right of the page.
"The Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education was created not only to collect and preserve old maps but specifically to promote their study and their use in teaching. These complex and richly textured documents comprise a crucial element of our cultural heritage. We can use them to trace humanity’s spatial histories, from engagements with nature to modern globalization. By studying their production, we can comprehend how art, technology, faith, and science intertwine in the human experience. By exploring how they have variously been used, we can develop a social history of culture. The study of maps thus encompasses and integrates the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Their study offers such compelling insights that anyone can enjoy and learn from them."
